Looking for a Longine Pocketwatch?
Since 1832, Swiss watch company Longine has been producing quality timepieces. If you want a watch that's classic, durable, and exquisite, then you can't go wrong with this company! Maybe you would love a good pocketwatch. If so, you can find what you're looking for with Longine.
** Pocket Watch Tip ** The Bulova company, established since circa 1875, has been providing consumers with quality timepieces for generations. Headquartered in New York, the Bulova company is owned by Loews today. In the early days, a young immigrant named Joseph Bulova opened a tiny jewelry store. Bulova achieved massive success, and even had the first multi million dollar advertising campaign in the 1930's.
Pocketwatches are collected by many. There are various reasons for this. One is the history and heritage involved. In 1492, a clockmaker offered the Marchese di Manta what he referred to as a pocket clock, and claimed it surpassed the one carried by the Duke of Moderna. Later in 1510, a locksmith from Nuremberg named Peter Henlein began manufacturing and distributing the first pocketwatches, which were well recieved and gained popularity throughout Europe.
Pocketwatches come in two forms -- those without covers, and those with covers. Whilst coverless watches are often used in professional settings like in hospitals, the covered type are usually preferred by consumers. This is because the hinged cover provides protection for the clock face as well as aesthetic value. There are pocketwatches in every fine metal imaginable, from bronze to platinum.
In the 1600's, pocketwatches were carried on a chain around the neck, instead of in the pocket. They were large and cumbersome compared to today's watches. In the 19th century, pocket watches were adopted as the official way to keep time for the railroad industry. Railroad watches had to fulfil a stringent set of criteria before being accepted for use. Pocketwatches were also the timepiece of choice for men, as wristwatches were seen as feminine accessories. Nonetheless during World War II, it was discovered that a wristwatch was simply an easier way to keep time.
** Pocket Watch Tip ** The Hampden Corporation is recognized for producing top quality timepieces including wrist watches and pocket watches. If you're seeking a special gift for a woman in your life, or a striking addition to your own collection, you may wish to consider Hampden ladies pocket watches.
Since then, wristwatches became the choice of many and pocketwatches declined in popularity. However, railroad enthusiasts and watch collectors alike still have great interest in these timepieces, such as the Longine pocketwatch. You can find Longine pocketwatches from different years, from the early 1900's to today.
Your local jeweler will be a good place to find Longine pocketwatches, or you can purchase one on the Internet. This brand of pocketwatch would make an excellent gift for a collector, or for anyone experiencing a milestone. Pocketwatches are often kept as heirlooms and handed down from parent to child.
