All About Harry Potter Pocket Watches

Harry Potter is the well known protagonist in a series of children's novels. These novels were, and still are, written by a woman named J.K. Rowling. Rowling used to be a starving single mother, and would sit in a cafe while jotting down what would become the first Harry Potter book. Although Rowling experienced a bit of trouble initially, once Harry Potter was published, it achieved phenomenon success. Other books followed, and currently, Rowling is working on the last book in the series.

** Pocket Watch Tip ** Hampden Deuber, originally a small watch company known as Hampden, began creating pocket watches in 1876. In 1889, Hamden was bought by the Deuber Company, hence the new name. This company introduced the first 23 jewel movements in the United States. They also produced top quality watches, including railroad watches, until they went bankrupt in 1928.

Harry Potter books focus on the protagonist, of course, who is a student at the Hogwarts School of Wizardry. Harry and his friends, Ron Beasley and Hermione, encounter all sorts of adventures and magical situations in these books. Through the series, which comprises several books that are quite lengthly, readers have grown up with these characters and perhaps experienced some of the same coming of age issues. Rowling's penchant for mystery, drama and fun makes these books appealing to adults as well. This series of books has become so popular with children and adults alike that there are movies, clothes, collectibles, games, and even pocket watches created based on these books. The Harry Potter empire is booming, and both grownups and kids clamor for these wizardly collectibles.

Harry Potter pocket watches are pursued by two groups of collectors: those who are fans of Harry Potter, and those who collect pocket watches. These watches make perfect gifts for the child in your family that enjoys Harry Potter. These watches don't always come cheap, though. While they were offered in retail stores by Warner Brothers for the price of $30, they are now being featured on online auction sites and specialty sites for prices in the hundreds. One good place to look for these timepieces is Ebay, where you can sometimes find them at much lower prices than you would at a specialty shop.

** Pocket Watch Tip ** Pocket watches have been around since the late 1400's. A clockmaker named Bartholomew Manfredi offered what he called a pocket clock to the Marchese di Manta. Manfredi claimed that his pocket clock was superior to even the one carried by the Duke of Moderna. In 1510, the first pocket watches were manufactured and distributed by a man named Peter Henlein. Henlein was a locksmith from Nurenberg, and his efforts helped spread the pocket watch craze throughout Europe.

Typical features of these watches include precision quartz movement, an antique looking case in a bronze tone, raised gold toned hour indicators, an engraving of Hogwarts on the case, and a picture of Harry on the face.
