The very first pocket watch came into the limelight in 1462 in a letter from a clockmaker named Bartholomew Manfredi to the Marchese di Manta. Manfredi claimed to have a pocket clock that was of higher quality than the timepiece owned by the Duke of Modena. However, pocket watches didn't come into fashion until after 1510, when a man named Peter Henlein started manufacturing and distributing them throughout Europe.

There were a stringent set of criteria that all railroad watches had to meet before they could be used. This was due to an infamous train wreck that occured in 1891 because the engineer's watch had stopped for four minutes.

During World War I, the popularity of pocket watches declined when soldiers in the field learned that wrist watches were better alternatives for checking the time. More and more people began wearing wrist watches, and pocket watches became almost obsolete. However many people with old fashioned values continued to carry pocket watches, and collectors continued to seek these timepieces for their collections and as family heirlooms.

** Pocket Watch Tip ** Hampden Deuber, originally a small watch company known as Hampden, began creating pocket watches in 1876. In 1889, Hamden was bought by the Deuber Company, hence the new name. This company introduced the first 23 jewel movements in the United States. They also produced top quality watches, including railroad watches, until they went bankrupt in 1928.

Pocket watches come into two types -- those with covers, and those without. Most of the time, you'll find that Hampden Ladies pocket watches are delicate pieces with hinged covers to protect the watch face from damage such as scratching.
