Pocket watches were commonly used in the railroad industry, especially during the 1800 and 1900's. After a train accident in 1891 that arose because the engineer's watch stopped, the railroad association created stringent qualifications that pocket watches had to meet before being used by engineers.

After World War I, wrist watches took over to become the choice timepiece for most people, but pocketwatches still remained prized heirlooms, collectibles, and timepieces for people who find wristwatches uncomfortable. A pocket watch can be engraved with initials, a name, or a message, making these timepieces wonderful heirlooms and gifts.
